Facebook's New Life Saving Feature - They Now Control Your Organs As Well As All Your Data

Written by Simply Zesty on

There is of course a liberal amount of sarcasim in my title so let me explain. As Facebook are ramping up towards their $100 billion IPO either later this month or early July, one of the most important factors in getting a good price is positive PR. Today they are ensuring they dominate the tech and mainstream press for the day by releasing a feature that they think will save thousands of lives. As Facebook says on its site:

More than 114,000 people in the United States, and millions more around the globe, are waiting for the heart, kidney or liver transplant that will save their lives. Many of those people – an average of 18 people per day – will die waiting, because there simply aren't enough organ donors to meet the need. Medical experts believe that broader awareness about organ donation could go a long way toward solving this crisis.

The nice thing about this is that they also give you the option to sign up there and then with the relevant organ donation group. As you can imagine, the privacy around this is pretty tight and you can choose exactly who you want to share the information with. The feature is only available in a limited amount of countries including the U.S. and UK upon launch but will roll out to more countries as time goes on.

How The Feature Will Work

Facebook has introduced the feature in an effort to make more people aware that you are an organ donar. The logic here is that seeing lots of your friends taking that action will pressurize you into doing it as well. To start, you have to:

1. Click Life Event at the top of your timeline

2. Select Health & Wellness

3. Select Organ Donor

4. Select your audience and click Save

As you would expect from Facebook

, the real beauty of this is in the viral distribution and how it gets shared with friends. The info appears on your timeline, in the 'about' section, and if you choose to let it, the news feed of friends. The other great feature here is that there's an app built into Facebook that helps you choose the best local place to sign up and donate your organs, if you are not already one. This feature is only available in the U.S. and the UK at the moment.
