Why LinkedIn Is Rife For Disruption

LinkedIn is the business social network of choice for over 200 million professional, and since its IPO, it’s widely been seen as a model of financial security and success. Despite all that mainstream appeal, I wanted to discuss the fact that it must be rife for disruption with somebody coming along with a much better product.

your only point in this video is that better design is going to naturally compelling users to change sites? A better designed site would only be one component of why users would shift to another social media page. furthermore, your evidence is based on your own personal interaction instead of any statistics. I’m not defending LinkedIn’s UI, but based on facts people spend around 17min per month on the site. That’s quite impressive in comparison to Twitter, which is only 21min/month.

  Yeah I get what you are saying but the one reason that people spend so little time on Twitter is because they are doing so on all their apps and not on the web. Linkedin users spend a small amount of time on the site but the reason they can make money I guess is that they are there for a very implicit reason which is either looking for new business or trying to find a job!

I agree that I would’t mind seeing a genuine competitor enter the market, but it’s more because I’ve grown tired of LinkedIN’s attempts to get me to subscribe to their fee paying model. I use the site, that should be enough for them. I don’t mind being asked once to upgrade but I do mind monthly mails, I’m clearly not in that small segment who will get significant value, so please stop asking me. You just seem desperate and greedy.

Their 3 pronged revenue model make them a very strong commercial proposition though. As with most ‘disruptive’ players, if somebody were to focus on mobile first, I could see splinter sites in country’s where LinkedIN hasn’t grown roots appearing.

  Yeah that is exactly what I was thinking as well. The amount of time that I am out at meetings, meeting people, conferences etc means that I’d actually use a clean slick mobile app all the time. Even thinking of opening Linkedin gives me a pain in the ass!

I have used LinkedIn for looking up job openings in certain companies but always find myself going to the company website instead for information. LinkedIn is difficult to look at and with all the clutter and different options everywhere I’d say a lot of people only use about 20% of the actual site. There is too much going on and a great deal of spam comes from them in emails & the premium sign up notifications. I’d too welcome a more simplified desktop & mobile version.
