How Social Media Works In Laymans Terms

So people have a pre-conceived idea that social media is fluffy and that it is very hard to measure and I am always nearly having to defend it to people who can’t actually see where the real monetary value lies for businesses. Let me give you an example that will show you just how simple and clear it is and if you still don’t get it then we have issues :)

Step 1

I am out eating my dinner and decide to take the following twitpic and write the following message

Picture 2

Bento Box Japan

Stage 2

One of my followers spots the lovely picture and sends me the following message

Colm Troy twitter

Stage 3

I reply and give him the necessary information and my personal recommendation

Twitter beacon Hotel

Stage 4

The seed has been planted in his mind about the bento box in The Beacon Hotel

Beacon Hotel

Now he might not check it out tomorrow or indeed this week but he was thinking about buying one of those lovely dinners and he has a personal recommendation from a foodie he trusts(I hope he trusts me). The Beacon hotel will at some stage in the future make a sale 100% based on the fact that I took that photo and shared it online. I really can’t make it any clearer than that to show that social media will directly get you sales and the businesses who get that will be the winners in this space.

*We do have restaurant clients but the Beacon Hotel is not one of them.

    Don’t worry Niall – I do trust you :)
And I will be picking up a bento box the weekend!

  • I am always trying to explain to hotels about the benefits of social media. They have hundreds of people going through their doors every day/week armed with web-enabled mobile phones, tweeting and twitpic-ing about their property….they need to be part of the conversation and engage with their customers & potential customers in this medium. Its so easy!

    • Ciara it is the one area that excites me so much having come from that background. If i didn’t have bigger plans for SZ I would be all over opening a small agency dedicated to restaurants and hotels. It is wide open for somebody to come in and advise people in that trade alone!

Consequently you’ve blogged about your experiences, and now the next time I’m near Dundrum I’m probably going to go to the Beacon Hotel instead of those places in the shopping center. I knew it was near Dundrum because I clicked through to their link. +1 customer
