Awesome post! You're not the only one with the same sentiment. Search Engine Strategies had an article earlier this year (2010) in which the author mentioned that while Facebook and Twitter had grown in the number of users and time spent, Google had stagnated in usage volume. Now, this was a short measurement period, about a business quarter in time, and it was also mentioned that despite the growth in usage, Facebook and Twitter still did not match to the amount of use Google's search engine receives. But it is a similarly clear indicator that the nature of how sites are discovered is changing, which dovetails into your article's point.
I will go back and find the link, but I do recall it was a Feb issue of SES' magazine.
Thanks for your wonderful post.

I'm not too convinced of the automated social search future, sure it can hook into your social graph and make recommendations on your locality and like and dislikes but this requires a rich level of engagement to pad out your personal data. Interaction levels aren't guaranteed so it maybe niche but I'm not too sure of it's will be a mainstream channel. I guess something like the former aadvark seems more likely to me.

When meta data for a more semantic approach gets tapped on this should help google tap into a bit more meaning than plain text. Something like twitter annotations could help with this. Google future maybe isn't in a direct social networks but indexing this meta data and delivering something of meaning to the user

Hi Mark, thank you for taking the time to write such a detailed comment! You're definitely right about users being more knowledgeable - user behaviour online is changing rapidly and companies/services have to keep up with that now more than ever. People are just getting more intelligent incredibly quickly, often coming up with their own solutions or approaches to an service that's out there already. Search is definitely one of these areas.
The post by Tommy was a great one and people should be sitting up and taking notice that this is how online-savvy the younger generation is now. They're the ones that you need to impress and cater for. They're growing up with the internet and are now used to making it work for them, instead of just being 'in awe'.
It's the consumers that are essentially driving change and I find this fascinating.

Users/consumers are more knowledgeable and flexible than ever and thats what Google [and similar] needs to engage and interact with to move forward inline with adding value to these users/consumers.

The relevance of the consumer becoming producer over the past 5+ years is really important as they/we also become more and more aware of how to view what is relevant to us and create feeds that deliver what we want[and have opted in to view]. Rather than getting junk through our letter box, then spam through our inbox.

Your post By Tommy Collison [http://www.simplyzesty.com/social-media/social-media-eyes-smart-15-year] shows the extent to how some of the older generation are missing the point that the internet is simply there. Not a piece of magic in the corner of the room that can send things through the air and we should be all gobsmacked by that. It is also now proved that the younger age groups [16 - 24] are making more face to face meetings beacause of their connectivity through social media

As part of the fabric of everyones life it will develop and we/consumers will develop ways of using it, its down to the providers not to anny and cause the consumer to produce negative content. Which they can do quicker than many businesses.
