Crowdsourcing The English Twitter Population

Posted on November 3rd, 2009 by Niall Harbison in Twitter, lists

The idea is simple. We want to put new Twitter lists to great use by creating lists of every single person using Twitter in England. We want to do it using twitter and we want to use the power of crowd sourcing to do it. All you have to do is tweet the message below and we will collect all the tweets and add them to the lists for each county. We will then publish the results and have a full twitter list of users for each of the counties as an incredible public list for the English public to use.

What you need to tweet to get listed

I want to get listed #TwitterEssex add yourself here http://bit.ly/44DRZ5

*Replace Essex with the county you live in

Where To Find The Lists

You can see the full Twitter lists at Twitter.com/simplyengland and Twitter.com/simplyengland2 Twitter.com/simplyengland3. The reason there are 3 is because Twitter onlly allows you 20 lists per profile. The lists will be updated as the day goes on but will NOT be updated in real time so don’t worry if you don’t appear instantly on the lists, you will appear eventually!

  1. I’m from Louth but am at University in Chester, UK. Should I join this?

  2. I would join both the Irish and English one If I were you, you are perfectly in your right and they are both relevant to you. The Irish one is here http://www.simplyzesty.com/twitter/crowdsourcing-irish-twitter-population/

  3. “Everyone in Britain using Twitter”: slight hyperbole surely? I know several users who log on only occasionally and could easily miss the 72hr deadline. They’re no less Twitter-users than I am, though.

  4. This ‘experiment’ is just generating lots of Twitter spam.

    • Hi, it’s certainly a fair point. We’ve set ourselves the challenge to gather as many as possible in 72 hours, hoping to get a good overview of which counties/states are the most active on Twitter.

  8. You do know there’s only 500 entries per list?

  9. Your Durham list is already in use by Durham in the US. Calling it County Durham or Co Durham (which is correct anyway) will help sort that. Otherwise the list won’t be useful to us. Good idea though, and not too late to change it. Thanks @brendadada

  12. Interesting Idea, I found a few blogs talking about “Everyone in Britain using Twitter”, and mapping the UK twitter population, but your post clearly says the English population and English counties. What about Wales, Scotland and NI, are you talking UK, GB, or England. You need to make that clearer your either mapping England, the UK or Great Britain all of which are different!

  13. Hope this doesn’t mean more spam followers!

  14. What a shame – nice idea but ill-thought through I’m afraid to say. Only 500 people per list, a completely irrational self-imposed 72 hour time limit that smacks of self-promotion rather than a desire to create a useful public resource. tsk.
