Getting Your Idea Off The Ground

Sledge IdeasWe all have amazing ideas. Ideas that would make millions and enable us to retire early. Ideas that would take our business to the next level. Ideas that would help to build our community or grow our brand or simply an idea of taking our whole family on a dream holiday. Ideas are what get us all out of bed in the morning or put an extra pep in our step when it’s gray and cold outside. Ideas are what get us through the day when all we see are bills, traffic jams and crocked politicians wasting our money.

But Ideas are hard work. You need to execute on your ideas or they will remain just that, ideas. Think of your idea as taking a sledge to the top of a steep hill. The walk up there through the snow in the ice cold isn’t going to be much fun. Far from it. You might question your sanity, you might opt for a lower starting point on the hill or just give up but the people who take their sledge (or idea) to the top of the hill won’t be any more talented or smart than those who failed but they will feel the full speed of the hill with the fresh wind in their face while laughing all the way to the bottom of the hill simply because they had determination and stuck with it.

To make you ideas happen don’t just push the snooze button. Forget about the pints after work for a while. Do you really need that shiny new laptop or will the old one do just fine for now? Go to bed at 1 instead of 12. Turn off that soap. Turn off the TV full stop actually. Work on the train or bus. Save that extra penny. Do whatever it takes.

Remember it is not the smartest person who gets their sledge to the top of the hill but the most determined. That should be you.

It’s better late than never. Now is the moment to get the ideas off the ground. Often the first step is the crucial ones. We often hesitate to take the first step thinking of the consequences, but once we place the first step, we have attained the first step to victory.

  • Sabina Piter says:

Motivation is always a big factor here, but, as Tim Harford says it over an over again in “The Logic of Life”, rational people respond to incentives, and we are all rational (at least subconsciously, even if sometimes the choices we make may seem irrational to others). So all that’s left is to come up with incentives – internal, personal and motivating incentives! I think it works to take small steps, but them them regularly and consciously, the walk up the hill will be less tiring.
