An Example Of Social Media At Work

One of the questions I get asked the most is how do you measure the return on social media and is it really worth investing all the time and effort when the ROI can seem distant and vague. I always try to explain it to people but if I am honest I can see in their eyes that they are still a bit vague about just how big the positive effects can be. I am however happy to report that I can now show a great example of it at work that even somebody with little or no internet or marketing knowledge should be able to understand……..

My other company Lookandtaste (which teaches people how to cook through video) has a daily show which we have sponsored. We are trying to build a bit of a following around the show and one great way of doing that is by giving away great prizes that foodies will be interested in. We worked with one of our sponsors Odlums to get some great stuff to give away from kitchen equipment manufacturer LeCreuset. Now instead of just running banners or asking users to email in an answer to a question we asked a simple question….Why should you get the LeCreuset Pot? Here are some of the answers……

This tiny little competition has been spread through Twitter by foodies telling their friends and been seen by 1000s on Facebook who have passed it on to other friends through their news stream. Now hopefully you are starting to see why social media is so important and will continue to be as we go forward. As a brand or business would you prefer to pay a newspaper 5k for an ad that people will flick past and possibly remember or would you rather give a free pot away and have foodies writing about how they love your product, aspiring to own one and thinking about their chances of winning it all week long? I could go ahead and analyze it further for you but I think you pretty much get what I am talking about! If not check out the video…..
