New Movie Paranormal Activity Uses Social Media To Create Buzz

We love seeing really innovative campaigns around social media and the movie release for low budget “Paranormal Activity” is certainly something that falls under that bracket. Paramount, the studio releasing the film have started a campaign to see it get an extended full launch by asking fans to “demand” to see the film and as you can see from the counter below demand is rocketing. They have a site dedicated to the film with a variety of ways to spread the word including Twitter, Myspace, Blog and Facebook and movie fans all over the world are picking up on the buzz.

What remains to be seen is if the movie is actually any good (reviews are generally saying it is average) as most of the people interacting around it online haven’t even seen it yet and many people would suggest that this is just a slick marketing plan by the studio to build a buzz around a movie that would have gone on general release anyway. What has to be admired is that studios are now trying to use social media before the actual launch date of movies to build a rapport with potential movie goers.

Studios also realize the importance of social media after recent movies have opened strong on the opening night only for chatter online on Twitter and Facebook to kill the movie after poor reviews. The biggest casualty was Bruno which due to massive marketing opened to massive opening night sales but was shot down on the social networks and bombed on the Saturday night.

It’s just great to see movie studios embracing the power of social media and will be very interesting to see how it goes on this campaign, something tells me they will make the 1 million mark pretty easily.
