10 Apps That Will Prosper When Apple Launches Tablet Device
We all know that Apple is about to launch a tablet device of some sort with most reports suggesting that it will be between September and November in order to be out in time for the Xmas sales. The chances are that it will be a larger version of the iPhone running a similar operating system and that of course means that the 70,000 or so apps in the app store will run on this bigger device. When the app store launched developers and brands jumped on board creating some great apps but these were always tailored towards a mobile device and with this possible new device changing the playing field we had a look at 10 apps that would work even better on a larger device than they currently do on the iPhone…
1.Amazon Kindle
The Kindle app has existed on the iPhone for a while now but hasn’t really taken off probably due to the small screen. The kindle itself though is a success already but with the new Apple tablet to come in at the same size and with many additional features will it make the Kindle obsolete? The large screen should make it easier to read and with Apple involved you can be sure it will be super slick and portable and will replace taking a good book to bed. The only problems that could be hanging over this one is battery life for long distance travel but you would hope that it is at least as good as the iPhone. With the tablet expected to come in at well over twice the price of the kindle you won’t find people buying just to use the kindle app but it will be a great additional feature
2.Games
This is one of the most obvious ones on the list as although the iPhone has some amazing games they can often seem limited on the small screen. We will have to assume that the larger device will have the same features as the iPhone including accelerometer which will offer a huge range of exciting new games. This device has the possibility to take on and kill other game platforms like the Nintendo DS with the only major sticking point being the price point with Apple expected to bring it in around the $799 mark. Watch out for the major players in the games market to start dedicating more time and money to this new platform.
3.Apps To Share
The iPhone and most similar devices have Wifi connectivity which allows players to play against each other but something that doesn’t happen is multiple players playing on the same device due to the size of the iPhone. With the much bigger tablet device you can imagine a world where the tablet becomes a chess board on an aeroplane between business partners or you pass a virtual monopoly board into the back of the car to keep the kids quiet on a long journey. You can expect app developers to tap into this new social element to the device that has not existed before.
4.Google Docs
Most of the work we are doing is starting to move to the cloud (stored online) and the best example of this is Google Docs. People want to share and collaborate on documents these days and although most people have been using Google Docs online it is not really feasible to do much but check stuff on the iPhone. A larger screen will again open up a whole host of options and allow people to access their Docs on the go and sync up and save as they go. Expect Google to launch a whole new suite of apps tailored specifically to this new device to make the best use of it’s features.
5.Flickr
The last few years has seen a massive rise in the amount of digital photo frames on the market and there is a huge stampede under way by manufacturers to come up with video versions of these devices. Flickr are perfectly positioned to use their app to capture a huge new market share as users will love showing off their photos on a new large screen. The fact that users will in effect be backing their photos up in the cloud will also be a major attraction and the portable nature of the device means that you will have access to your photos full screen wherever you are.
6.Sketches
I don’t know what it is about this device but it just reminds me of a massive etch a sketch every time I see it and that will probably be one of the features it will be most used for. There are a few apps on the market already that let you sketch and draw but the “fat finger” issues with the iPhone have made it difficult for users to have any precision with their drawings. With a new bigger touch screen drawing will become a lot easier and we can expect to see a raft of new apps launched to capitalize on this area. This is one of the many apps available on the the new device that will appeal massively to a younger demographic.
7.Spotify
You know the way somebody always takes control of the iPod at parties? Well that same thing is about to happen but they will now be passed the tablet to create a spotify playlist! The only problem here could be the inevitable showdown with Apple and them wanting to keep iTunes at the forefront of their earnings strategy but you can expect music (and especially music videos) to play a large part on this new device. Could this be the perfect time for Apple to introduce a new version of the tired looking iTunes interface with a particular emphasis on video?
8.Hulu and YouTube
This is where things get really really exciting. There isn’t even really much need for us to explain why this is going to be a huge winner but you have to presume that HD videos will play a huge part of this device and where Apple sees it going. You can expect most of the HD content to be streamed online due to the increased broadband speeds and the fact that storage will probably be small enough. Apple TV will long be forgotten as you walk around the house with perfect TV anywhere you want to go. Expect a whole host of new video streaming apps to appear over the coming 12 months
9.Instructional Cooking Videos
Ok so I may be a little biased on this one as we have an app in the store already that has over 300 cooking videos for the iPhone but that is a small device and in all honesty it is probably pretty hard to cook while looking at a small screen on your phone. Imagine what it would be like propping up a large tablet and cooking in the kitchen with the possible added feature of using voice control to stop and start the video? You can kiss goodbye to all those cookbooks and welcome the future of cooking. This will probably gazump all the kitchen manufacturers who are out there developing devices for the kitchen but the price point could be an issue.
10.Google Earth
Well this is going to work exactly the same way as it works on a desktop and the iPhone but it makes this list purely on the fact that it is bound to look stunning on the new large touch screen. There is only so long that you can play around with a virtual world but you will get at least a good 10 minutes fun out of this and it will no doubt be used by the media worldwide to show off the device at it’s best upon launch.
