Why Do Large Tech Companies Treat Ireland With Such Disrespect?

I don’t often have a rant here on the blog but today I feel like having one. It’s directed at some of the biggest companies in the world who choose to base their businesses here in Ireland including Apple, Facebook and Google. As many of you will know Ireland is a hub for some of the world’s biggest companies because of our English language, generous corporation taxes and highly educated work force. Google employ over 1000 people here, Facebook will be creeping up on 500 by the middle of next year, Apple have tons of staff here and even new boy on the block Zynga are moving to Dublin to head up their European operations. So with Ireland clearly a vital cog in the wheels of all these companies why do we get treated like 2nd class citizens when it comes to new products? Time and time again products and services are launched all over the world and only weeks and months later do we actually get them here. There are too many examples to list but I’m talking about iPads, iPhones, Facebook Places, Google Street view etc. I can understand how these products would first launch in the USA because that’s realistically the most important market for these companies but ignoring a small country where you choose to base most of your European staff and avail of the great local resources is just not on. Even the UK which is just a stones throw away gets better treatment than we do and gets products weeks and months ahead of us. I know we are a tiny market and pretty irrelevant in the bigger scheme of things but I just think it is plain wrong to treat us as second class citizens when it comes to releasing products and services.

These companies are never going to help their bottom line by releasing products here but I think out of pure decency we deserve a little bit more respect. It literally reminds me of the old days where civilizations would conquer countries, take all the best natural resources and haul them back to their own countries while treating the locals with disdain. Don’t get me wrong we are massively grateful that these companies create so many jobs and contribute to the economy here but showing us a little bit more respect and not leaving us at the back of the queue when it comes to new products and services would be nice. It’s the least we deserve.
