The iPad Video Review
When I heard about the iPad I knew that we needed one here at Simply Zesty as soon as we could get our hands on one and luckily a couple of days ago we got ours delivered. I wanted to play with it for a couple of days before reviewing it properly and I have to say it is quite simply incredible. I have been using apple products (phones and laptops) for over a year now and although not a fanboy I do appreciate them as being a cut above the rest and I think they are on to a massive winner with this device. I used it at home, in work and at a conference and although I still don’t know what it’s role will be exactly in my life I can see it being incredibly useful going forward. This device is making internet surfing and engaging with apps and content online so simple that a 2 year old would have little difficulty getting up and running with it.
Work
For those of you with iPhones you will know that you can do some tasks but most of it is quick fixes with the heavy lifting done back at the office with a desktop or laptop. The iPad changes that and allows you to write full emails, interact with tools like Google Docs easily and share and view rich media content easily. I did a full days work today on the iPad (only used 60% battery after 7 hours work) and really don’t think I could have done a lot better on a full computer. It is as fast as you could imagine and the clean pages and design make it super easy to navigate and switch between jobs. I did still need the phone in my other hand but with this device you can be as productive as in the office while out on the go and without having to carry the stuff that goes with a laptop and constantly be on the look out for power cables.
Pleasure
This device was basically built for Facebook. There is still no dedicated Facebook app for iPad but just using the web version was sheer pleasure and 10 times more intuitive that on a laptop. You could easily click in and out of content liking it and sharing with others while consuming all the rich media content on Facebook (apart form videos). Watching television (and in particular sports) is a pleasure and this feels like a device that will get people interacting with their televisions in a whole new way that Laptops were only scratching the surface of. The only part I didn’t like about the iPad was reading books, I just don’t like the screen and I tried a couple and it felt weird and uneasy to me. I will however say that my days of buying newspapers and magazines are over, with this device there is simply no need anymore.
Conference
I was speaking at a conference today and rather than having the usual problem of sitting in the audience trying to work while literally hanging out of a socket in the corner I was able to quietly and discretely take the iPad out of my pocket and start using it. I was able to scroll through my presentation in preparation, reply to emails, look at photos and designs on some projects we have been working on and generally conduct my daily life as normal. I don’t follow Twitter while at conferences but Tweetdeck could easily have been clicked in to view what other delegates were saying. The perfect conference going device.
Summary
This is going to change the way that we all consume media. This will not blow the nerds and geeks away but the real power will be seen when this falls in to the hands of housewives and regular joes who did not count surfing the web as a crucial part of their day until now. The battery lasts forever, you can learn the gestures and interface in about 2 minutes flat and once all the apps are released you are going to be able to do everything from runa bath to cutting your hair. The future has arrived and I like it ![]()
