Why Are Tweetdeck Trying To Re-Invent Twitter?
Tweetdeck is a great service that I use on a daily basis. It’s so good that I have to ration myself sometimes during the day as it can be very distracting but it’s a great way of keeping up to date with multiple accounts and tracking search terms for clients and your own business. I’ve always wondered how Tweetdeck would make money and it looks like they might be starting to think about that themselves by rolling out some new features that make them different to all the other Twitter clients on the market. Today Tweetdeck launched a new service called Deck.ly which effectively changes Twitter and allows you to communicate with people in more than 140 characters. This is built in to their apps across different platforms and all you have to do is effectively keep typing and it will do the rest for you. basically this is saying that if you use Tweetdeck the 140 character limit on Twitter has not been lifted for you.

Do We Need This?
There are plenty of times when I feel like I need more characters than I have at my disposal but the reason that Twitter is the success that it has grown in to is because of the brevity and the fact that it is an entirely new way of communicating. Giving people the freedom and scope to write whatever they want to is not a smart move and trying to re-invent something that has transformed communication for the better is not the way to go. I do have to admire Tweetdeck for seeing that they have very limited financial possibilities with their current model in a crowded space where they are at the mercy of competitors and Twitter themselves but I’m just not sure they are going down the right track here. I just don’t think your take something as amazing and useful as Twitter and try and improve it by taking away it’s one key feature which is short concise information. If I catch you writing any long winded life stories about your cat using this I’m hitting that un follow button in an instant! Please Tweetdeck don’t try and ruin Twitter.
