With Ireland in the midst of full scale campaigning for a General Election later this month, the power of social media is really coming to the fore. There have been numerous opinion polls about the state of the parties. We seem to get a new poll daily.

But the continuous stream of polls can’t compete with the instant anslysis impact of Social Media and Twitter in particular. Today, Enda Kenny, leader of Fine Gael refused to take part in a TV debate with the other party leaders.

This proves that Social Media is going to play a big role in this upcoming election as it has done in all recent elections since the last US Presidential Election.

Political parties are obsessed with public opinion and are constantly measuring it to determining how best to pitch their own particular message and how best to shape the position. Social Media is increasingly taking that ‘spin control’ away from the Parties and into the hands of the electorate.
