Niall,
A simple post that packs a punch!
Often when these new web 2.0 technologies emerge and everyone else you know is on them, you almost feel uncool if you're not. Like the kid at school wearing last year's sneakers.

What this mentality does is encourage us to deviate from our focus which is effectively marketing our brands and products as we had been doing already.

Cheers.

Agree completely. I'd even suggest taking the argument one step further - your communications success will be defined by what you ignore. Social media channels - though increasingly critical - are not strategies in their own right. They form part of a wider communications strategy that needs to consider a range of different tactics to achieve its objectives. Remember, shiny objects don't convince people, people convince people...

I'd phase it as, if a new equivalent service comes out, don't rush to work it, if you already have a good market. There's so much audience that you can easily be the Twitter King and yet there is a Twitter-B King.

Good blog - it's very easy to get over-active online but there is a motormouthy vibe to it. Can't beat quality contributions from people with a great perspective. NB stats that tell you how long people stay with your content.

Niall, I think your advice is very wise with this post. It's astounding how each new little thing we "try" eats into our time, bit by bit by bit until our days are spent splattered everywhere.

Saying no is difficult. I have to do better at it.
