I’ve always thought that the Internet would be better served using a “Word of Mouth” recommendation recruitment service, rather than the current self application one. For instance, if you could look at a list of candidates and see that 50 people in the same field feel that they would be perfectly suited to an advertised postition it must be more valuable to an employer than another 5’000 CV’s dropping in their laps.

Just a Thought

Hi Danielle. You're definitely right about it being the other way around as well, there's quite a few examples out there that support that. When you're looking for a job, it's more important than ever to keep your social media profiles in order, as you can bet the interviewer will have checked them out!

I often remind my students (I teach an adult business education course part-time) that social networks can prevent them from getting a job so they need to be careful what they put out there, but this is a good reminder that it can also help them get a job! Thanks!

I agree Christian. Am currently sifting CVs and fed up of same old stories from applicants. Video CV would be a great way for the candidate to get themselves in front of employer and give them a head start on other applicants

Have to say, I love the idea of a video cv - I can picture it now with just the right amount of after effects and post production to show relevant experience and clickable links. If I ever find myself job hunting again I'd definitely consider it. Plus, as someone who has also been on the cv sifting side of the table, it would impress me a lot to see someone do that (so long as it was done well of course).

Well done Lauren on a super post. I am a big believer in social media as a tool to get noticed in a competitive marketplace.I have worked with a number of job seekers recently who have found employment as a direct result of clever use of LinkedIn, Twitter and even Facebook.

To all the job seekers out there, good luck with your search and have a great 2010.

I wouldn't say it's an either/or situation. Social media is one way to find a job, but I would never say it's the only way!Sites like monster.com definitely have a future, but maybe they will become more of a social experience themselves, i.e. building in more referral options for your community or integrating with your existing social media profiles.

It is scary out there if your not currently employed and these are some great ideas to look for work. I am curious though, do you feel that social media will put a death to sites like Monster.com and other established sites like it? Is social media going to the soon to be 'norm' for finding jobs?

These are excellent tips that folks looking for jobs would find invaluable. I'd add to your list use of smart search tools like TipTop http://FeelTipTop.com that can also be used for discovering and then interacting with the right people.
