I'm bringing in social media slowly, at a rate where I can assimilate information and execute on it. Every new tool brings in new ways to connect, so the tasks grow combinatorally. Example: blog/twitter and twitter/blog, 2 relationships, not too bad. Now add Facebook: blog/facebook, blog/twitter, twitter/facebook... and the reverse relationships make for 6 interactions! Add say linkedin, you now have 24 possible interactions! Yeehaw!

It totally stands to reason that Social Media has to be used in all emergency situations. So many people are tuning out of TV now and tuning into the computers and iPhones. A Social Media campaign will hit way more people than any other form of information distribution, at least in these times.

Thanks Fred. I definitely think they'll be engaging in social media on a more ongoing basis from now on. There was an article on brandrepublic earlier, where they discussed their marketing efforts over the next few days, and indeed in 2010 http://www.brandrepublic.com/News/974967/Eurostar-cancels-marketing-activity-prepares-2010-rethink/
It's just the case that any social media activity over the weekend was good under the circumstances, but that they hadn't attributed enough attention before the situation unfolded, outside of the Little Break campaign. Sure that'll change now!

Cool post Loz. Thanks for sharing. I really didn't get deeply into the details of what happened with the Eurostar but did not know that Eurostar had made their social media efforts as well. Everything I was overhearing on TV and Twitter was pretty much that they had disappeared...
Your conclusion is 100% banng on.
By watching the Eurostar You Tube channel, you can clearly see that they used social media very reactively and created a couple of videos based on the incident... I guess if they learnt their lesson, we'll go back in a month and we'll find loads of engaging videos and an active Twitter account :)
