New App Helps Explain How Much Time We All Waste On Email

We are all sick of hearing just how much time we all waste on email and what an ineffective communication tool it is. In the last month we have even seen one company ban it completely and another switch off emails outside of work hours. For many of us email is something that more or less controls our work days and having real alternatives is a bonus. The beautiful thing about this app is that it can look at all your activity over the year and give you a high level view of just how much time you are spending on emails. When you are buried in them every day it is not always easy to understand just how much time you are wasting but the stats don’t lie.

The app does a great job of breaking the data down in to easy to understand visuals. You can quickly build up a picture of when you send and receive most of your emails and where you could possibly be wasting your time.

A New Way Of Emailing

The app itself is just a way of promoting the new version of Toutapp which is a productivity add on to Gmail that allows you to email using templates to cut down on time spent in your email. The video below does a great job of showing off the benefits of the app.

The one big challenge that Toutapp faces is that email habits are notoriously hard to change and even though we all hate it email the simple fact of the matter is that it works reasonably well. The video above will be a delight for people who send lots of the same emails over and over (business development, sales etc) but I don’t see it really catching on with the masses. I’ll certainly be giving it a try myself as I can see lots of uses for it including replying to people who pitch stories here on the blog and when we get tons of job applicants for one position. It is good to see people thinking about ways to improve email and every little helps!
