Over the last week we carried out a survey of the Irish public on how they use social media and the results were quite surprising. It is clear that social media is starting to become a large part of people’s lives with more and more people using it in the work place. In fact 90% of people can access sites such as Facebook, Twitter and Bebo at work and a staggering 25% claim to spend more than 2 hours on social sites every single day while at work.  It is not just in the work place that people are using social networks with over 75% of people saying that they now “socialize” online and over 35% of people surveyed saying they had “met somebody romantically or flirted online”. The big winners are also predictably Facebook and Twitter but Irish sites such as Boards.ie and Pix.ie also show up well. Overall the survey gives a good overview of how Irish people use social media and the one thing that stood out for us was just how much time people were spending online. Thanks for sharing this!

  • Interesting stuff and also, thanks for sharing Would be nice to see an even bigger pool and details of location – what effect does the rural-urban divide have on usage etc.

Good to see pix.ie do so well in the photo storage stakes given the competition. Must look at integrating them into the website.

we plan to conduct one again, to compare trends and including location would be a good addition I think. We like to see Irish sites doing well too!

  • Grea stuff! Interesting results.

I had thought that a lot of the businesses around Ireland had blocked social networking website with software like websense and all that. I guess that’s more in the corporate world though and SME businesses acount for so many of the businesses out there!

I’m one of those spending more than 2 hours on social networks but it comes with the job, I am surprised about the other 47 people in that category. Good to know I’m not alone!

It’s also good to see that more and more businesses are realising that blogs are a great way of interacting online. I imagine that stat will keep on growing in the future.

Bebo got a battering in your survey which surprised me, but maybe it had something to do with the audience that took the survey? Twitter perfoming well as always. I read today that they grew 2000% in the US in the last year. Quiet a feat!

Nice job. Looking forward to more surveys in the future.
