Hootsuite Reaches 3 Million Users In 3 Years, 1.5 Million Messages Sent Daily

HootSuite Reaches 3 million SignupsJudging by the huge response to yesterday’s post “How Twitter Alienated me With New Tweetdeck”, Niall doesn’t seem to be the only one bothered by the recent changes made to Tweetdeck. So coincidently, it was announced today that the dashboard’s main competitor, Hootsuite, had reached three million sign ups. Hootsuite currently has more Twitter followers than the Twitter-owned Tweetdeck, which gives an idea of just how popular the dashboard has become since its launch three years ago and how big a threat it poses to Tweetdeck.

Hootsuite posted the news of their three millionth sign up on their blog today, and also included an infographic with a breakdown of some stats. Its growth has certainly been slower than Tweetdeck’s; Hootsuite had only reached one million users by the time it turned two, in contrast to Tweetdeck’s fifteen million downloads by the same point, but its growth increased steadily and at a rapid pace – it only took eight months to reach two million users, and a further six to reach three million users. Most sign ups come from the USA (39 per cent), with Japan coming in second, and the UK in third place. 80 per cent of daily usage of the site comes from the Web, while the other 20 per cent is made up by the users of mobile devices, a market that is continuing to grow.

Hootsuite boasts six million unique profiles, with 45 per cent of those being Facebook profiles and Twitter hot on its heels at 42 per cent. The remainder is taken up by LinkedIn with 8 per cent, and 5 per cent coming from other smaller social media sites. 1.5 million messages are sent daily through Hootsuite, while Tweetdeck was seeing four million messages sent daily in 2010. Hootsuite still have quite a way to go to reach the heights that Tweetdeck has, but with Tweetdeck’s blog  laying silent since the announcement of the takeover by Twitter in May 2011, Hootsuite seems to be in the perfect position to continue to grow and become the dashboard of choice.
