You're definitely right in that some companies are really making a name themselves through using Twitter in innovative ways, as opposed to using it 'just because'. It's the brands that are willing to take a risk that will ultimately stand out here.

Thanks Duncan! Measurement is definitely key here and you need to set out with an understanding of what a single 'tweet' means to your brand. Attributing value in terms of referral traffic, for example, is definitely one way to go and allows you to accurately judge if your campaign has been a success or not.

Twitter is so new it hasn't even started to settle down yet, although as soon as it does it will be uncool and we will all leave.

It's interesting how marketers are approaching Twitter, the "just don't get it" types don't really worry about it because I guess they just don't get it.

Those who do, are able to grab a piece of the action that isn't being grabbed right now. The thing is, you have to go in with a good firm, confident grab to make it work and Mpora and Moonfruit have both done this. These companies get it and are ones to watch.

Other publishing companies don't get it. Can you imagine Future publishing doing something like this? I think they are just getting fax machines installed ;)

This is not social media marketing, it's buzz marketing which uses social media as a vehicle.

Great post Lauren, With the massive increase in #hashtag usage & various trending topics it is really interesting to actually hear some positive results and some ability to measure the effects they can have. I think ultimately there does need to be some thought behind how you will be using #hashtags and as you say what is the achievement required which then allows some form of measurement to be in place if you know the goal, I think this post clearly highlights that.

All to easy to say hey lets get a trending topic on Twitter but are not thinking about the why?
