GetGlue : An Awesome Social Checkin Experience For Content

We have a problem with noise on the web, there is too much of it. I miss tons of content on Twitter and Facebook simply because I can’t spend my entire day there watching it stream past so the great links and content get lost in a sea of noise with people saying good morning and talking about TV shows they watch. GetGlueis service that aims to help you solve that problem while finding the best Movies, Albums and TV shows. It has been around for a while and has nearly 500,000 users and just last week launched an iPhone app and it is a service that really caught my eye with it’s usefulness and is well worth checking out. It can best be described as a mixture between Facebook and Foursquare with pretty cool features that allow you to like Shows, Albums or movies or even check in to them virtually as you consume the content. You all know that I am not a fan of physical checkin services like Foursquare but this one offers something different where you don’t reveal your location but instead the content that you are consuming. Why would you want to do that? Well because very much like Foursquare you get rewards or “stickers” for accomplishing certain tasks but the main benefit is that you get to find lots of new content as the service starts to know your likes and by following your friends you also uncover some great hidden gems and understand more about what they like.

Connect With Your Friends Easily

I am always loath to sign up to new services where I need to add my details and start from scratch. Been there too many times. With GetGlue I simply hit the Facebook Connect button and was up and running in a couple of seconds. My friends were ported in and within seconds I was playing around with the service looking at the content they had liked.

Tailor Made Revenue Model

I’ve never seen a site with a better chance of making revenue from day one! Imagine a service that could intimately know every bit of music, every TV show and every movie that you liked inside out and could serve you ads based on what you reveal. This is like Facebook’s like button but hyper targeted to content. If GetGlue can manage to get the numbers of users they need (all signs are that they have enough viral elements to do so) then they are on to a winner here. There is no reason why links to download songs on iTunes or to sign up to movie streaming services can not be incorporated further down the line and as soon as that happens they are sitting on a cash cow.

Cutting Out The Noise Through Gurus

The web is a very noisy place at the moment. Finding the good content is hard and that is why GetGlue is putting such emphasis on finding what it calls the “Gurus”. Gurus will act as the tastemakers on the site and will be people you follow to find the best content that you would otherwise miss. I don’t know much about Indie music but I know that Rob here at simply Zesty does so why not follow him and I could instantly find the best tracks. Finding the gurus will only help you find the best content and we know that people love being a guru!

GetGlue Is Multi Platform

So if all of the above was not enough to sell you there is also a shiny iPhone app, a firefox plugin that means GetGlue can follow you around your travels on the web and you can install it as a widget on your blog. Everything has been carefully planned and built in advance for this app to ensure that it spreads as quickly as possible and I have to say that I am incredibly impressed with it from what I have seen so far.
