This is one future of internet video, because it is a new video medium, designed specifically for the interactivity of internet. There will, of course, always be a place for “standard” video and it’s directoral artistry. The art to 360Â° video is in guiding the viewer through transition so that you don’t get them lost in the surroundings from one segment to another.

yellowBird is using LadyBug 2 cameras from Point Grey Research, which is a specialized camera that has six individual video sensors that are combined through software (instead of a curved mirror). Another specialized camera is made by Immersive Media Company and uses 11 sensors. They have a number of demo 360Â°videos available on their website from lots of different activities and applications.
Much of the development of this new medium is happening with PGR LadyBug cameras because of the extreme price difference and availability.

One of the most interesting applications that I’ve seen recently is the use of multiple 360Â° video cameras on stage at live music events to give the viewer the ability not only to look around, but jump from one camera to another. It’s called MATIvision. Check it out : http://bit.ly/dHGPe

360Â° video has had its share of growing pains, but the medium engages viewers and the reaction is overwhelmingly positive, so there is no doubt we will see much more.

Very cool, and I’m a fan – it certainly give you the feeling that you are there…. almost a virtual reality! Now all we need is the smell …..or in the case of festivals… maybe not!

Isn’t this the same technology that Google uses for their Street View – except that Google chooses not to show it in video mode, but in stills?

As this kind of technology is sure to become more widespread, it does raise quite a few interesting privacy questions…. On the one hand, how can you possibly get sign off from all those random people, and on the other, how can you (if you so wish) avoid being on some random internet (or who knows what!) camera footage?

Exactly – I’ve a stills lens that does similar – you point the camera up into a spherical mirror so it captures a big panorama around you – those guys have done a clever job in undistorting the footage into something that makes sense though.

It’s nothing really new or major technology wise but it’s definitely an interesting way of presenting things – It’s going to be quite useful for property sites I’d imagine!

I’ll be great for live events like pictured above although I’d imagine wedding videographers (that old video staple!) will absolutely LOVE this.
