Fifa Using Tweets To Knit The World Longest Football Scarf
Outside social media, one of the greatest activities that has always united different people together has been sports. No other activity brings such a large group of people together for a single cause: to cheer and support their team.
While that passion has been explored through Twitter recently, Fifa are now knitting the world’s longest scarf with the aim of breaking the world record. To do this, fans must post a message of support either on Facebook or Twitter for the chance to have it appear on the scarf.
However, the odd part of this campaign is that you can only send your message at specific times or during ’rounds’. This means that only the fastest can get their message on the scarf, which is strange considering that Fifa want to create the longest scarf ever knitted. It would make more sense to have the message system opened 24/7 to ensure the maximum number of messages are received.
Still, it’s a good way to engage and utilize the passion of fans. Also, there’s a nice interactive graphic that allows you to view the scarf and its contents in digital format.
The current record for the world’s longest scarf is 33 miles, and was knitted by 2,000 people to help raise money for Ty Hafan Children’s Hospice in Wales. At the time of writing, Fifa’s scarf was 243 meters long (meaning that they’ve only 52,865 more meters to go), but there will be numerous other opportunities to increase that length, especially considering how popular the games have been of late.
The promotion is to mark the release of the new Fifa 12 video game by EA Sports, available for all major consoles.
