"Nobody would fire up their browser on a mobile and go through the process of signing in and updating their status while squinting to see the screen but a simple app that can be accessed when on the go is priceless"

Apps are what we are using until the mobile web gets better - yeah today it's a ball ache using the browser but in 3/4 years time we'll see HTML5 and more web apps. Yes we'll still have apps but more stuff will be in the cloud.

Wrote about it here: http://mobileinc.co.uk/2010/01/google-near-me-now-gives-you-a-glimpse-of-life-after-apps/

Also you haven't mentioned functionality like your Facebook app becoming integrated with the phone. At the moment this isn't possible on your iPhone but on the Palm, your FB contacts are in your normal phonebook, you can upload to FB from your mobile gallery, messages from Facebook appear in your inbox like an SMS etc.

The future isn't 'more and more' social apps, it's integration with the handsets core features.
