If blogging is dead as some people are claiming and Twitter is microblogging which is short little bursts of mostly irrelevant information then there must be something in the middle that is not as extreme an option but still adds value, there is, Instant blogging. You will have noticed the rise in people using sites like Tumblr and Posterous to publish small bite sized pieces of content and it is a brilliant medium because it adds more long term value than just talking nonsense on twitter that will be forgotten by next week and is nowhere near as time consuming as blogging is. Instant blogging lets you have all the features of a normal blog but allows you to share content like photos, video, audio and text with the push of a button. The main reason why this form of blogging is getting more popular is because of mobile publishing, you could never post a full blog from our mobile but posting to Tumbrl or Posterous is very easily done. Here are the top 10 examples of sites that I like personally that are sitting in the middle and executing “instant blogging” perfectly…
This is why you are fat
Probably one of the biggest and best know uses of this format. This site shares some of the most disgusting food photos from around the world to show you why you are fat. The added beauty of this site is that you submit the content yourself so it is user powered.
Sad Guys on Trading Floors
The title gives a lot of it away and with the world in tough economic times recently this blog really captures the imagination with pictures from people around the world of traders looking sad. Simple but effective.

It’s All About the Bacon
One of the most popular memes on the internet for the last couple of years has been bacon with it coming in all shapes and sizes and this Tumblr blog captured the imagination of many by sharing daily stories about bacon from recipes to funny pictures.
Garfield Minus Garfield
Again quite a simple concept with the popular Garfield comic strip with a twist. In this daily strip Garfield is removed and the man just talks to himself to give a totally different perspective. Facinating
What I wore today
Poppy is somebody I follow on Twitter and this Posterous blog really couldn’t be much simpler…she takes a photo of herself every day to show what she is wearing. It helps that Poppy has a colorful dress sense and although new this is the sort of simple trivial content that works perfectly.
Kevin Rose
Kevin had pretty much given up blogging for the last couple of years and focused on Twitter but his new instant blog seems to have caught the imagination and fits his current style of producing content perfectly.
Max Abelson’s Super Groovy Videos
Great music videos from over the years akk brought together for you in one place with a guy who clearly knows his music editing them for your pleasure. Easy viewing.
Gary Vaynerchuk
Well know for his videos and one of the biggest users of Tumblr to share his videos. A big fan of instant publishing and has a huge audience on this his personal site.
Sara Zucker
Really simple allows Sara to share all her latest fashion and cool design stuff. She has a great eye and the blog is fantastic for browsing through at your leisure to find some little style gems.
Chef Food (my own effort)
I am not saying that this is in the top 10 in the world because I have only just started but I love the platform. I set it up in less than 5 minutes and I can publish posts from the Tumblr iPhone app and have them live in less than 20 seconds. It takes no work whatsoever and gives all my photos a home without me thinking about it.

I’ve been a massive fan of Garfield without Garfield for ages. Most of these sites have been around for years and are using these new mediums to distribute content more advantageously. Because they’ve been around for so long, they have tonnes of content ready to go!
Right now, I’m still wrapping my head around ping.fm and it’s powerful nature to distribute across multiple platforms, which funnily enough Gary Vaynerchuk put me onto.
Yeah ping is useful but TBH not a massive fan if just sending your content in one go to all your social networks. Sure I will post links to stuff on Facebook, twitter and even linkedin but I like to pick and choose what is relevant to which readers and have a tailored specific message. The whol point of social media is to not get involved with broadcasting the message aimlessly. Verynerchuk is so big that he can afford to just ping it out because people just see the name and pass it on no matter what
aw, thanks for featuring my blog
No worries
The shoes post on their own were good enough reason to have it included
You make a great point there about customising the message. Yet I ghost-write a few blogs and when I have to update statuses across platforms, ping.fm is a life saver. Also the link converter and tracker is nifty (allowing you to see which SN are giving you the most hits).
I guess being a blogger and writer, so much of my time is spent writing and reading I try to cut back on stuff where I can to save time. I haven’t had much experience with tumblr and posterous, but each month I try to explore and learn a new platform of SN advertising. This month was flickr, last month was tweetdeck. The only reason I haven’t looked at Tumblr much yet is because pnig.fm cant verify new accounts yet because of some migration malarkey. But I’ll give posterous a look-see.
Thanks for the heads-up on it!
Yeah Thomas I am not writing Ping.fm off 100% at all because if used correctly it could be very useful, I am just saying I have a bit of an issue with just broadcasting all the time.
If you are a writer I am not sure that Tumblr is your ideal platform as it is very instant publishing mostly suited to photos, videos and the like but that is not to say that it doesn’t work because I have seen people writing blogs on there but I think for traditional writing blogs are still the best platform. Good to hear that you are working oyur way through them though and trying them all out, that is the best way to get the hang of them and see what works best for you
