Niall, a good list, though, I'm not sure if roughly half the list would like to be labeled as "up and comers" Some of those that you mention are almost pioneers in the social media space. I agree that their blogs are all amazing reads and do understand that your list and your words are completely subjective, but just wanted to point out that some might frown on being called a n00b so to speak. Would have liked to have seen more of a balance in your list as well. There are some amazing women in the social media space that you and your readers should be made aware of.

Niall,
Thanks for sharing. I think many of your readers will enjoy learning which social media blogs you follow closely. My thought on blogs that rehash the same old thing-- Breaking social media news is important, but I tend to look for blogs that provide an analysis on the news. Anyone can recap a baseball game, but they give awards to the broadcasters that analyze the game well.

Wow! Thanks for including me in the list - I'm proud to have been included alongside some notable people who I have a lot of respect for! And I can definitely attest to the fact that I'm not a regular 'name' on most Top 20 lists, although I'm looking to change that!

Incidentally, social media and community engagement is also a big part of my current role at Absolute Radio, including a user-controlled radio station at www.dabbl.co.uk, and utilising social outposts and increasing interaction with our DJs, presenters and teams...

So although my title is now Digital Marketing, it's an expansion to include SEO, Mobile etc, rather than moving away from the social and community side of things!

Thanks for the 1000heads mention Niall. A really useful post and my Google Reader is now even more obese - it's amazing how I can spend so much time reading social media stuff and STILL miss a few of these good ones. I need to do some RSS feed filtering this morning...

Adam

100% agreed with you and as I say in the post blogs like Mashable that just print all the latest news and what I think are pointless twitter stories still very much have their place as I dip in to them all the time to see the latest "press released" social media news and they are good for newbies to see what is going on in the industry as a whole as the content is still very high level but the guys in this list are the ones I'd be reading to learn even more from!

Same old 20. What's new in this post? What, are you going for the halo effect? At least Chris Brogan and Seth Godin aren't there. But what about Paul Isakson? Johnny Holland?

Niall - another really insightful post - I'm a big fan of a lot of these Blogs, especially ones like Social Media Explorer who regularly compile case studies of social media in action.
I do however, think getting the balance right b/w 'churning out the same old sh*t' and being a bit different is difficult - these guys all do it very well - I guess it comes down to the audience of the Blog in question...or taken a step further, who your preferred target audience is.
From my own personal experience, providing some content that may be 'old hat' to more seasoned comms folk is incredibly useful for people who aren't as experienced and just keen to learn.
Anyway, great work on highlighting these good ones.
