Great blog post. This article was a great reference for my recent blog post on Social Media Reshaping Journalism http://cindykimblog.wordpress.com with Del Jones of USA TODAY. Thank for an insightful lineup of industries that will be impacted by social media.

". Should be fully killed off within the next 5 years" .

The blogosphere to me seems convinced that print media is doomed. Personally I just can't see it. Yes newspapers are in decline, and it is likely this trend will continue and many papers will close. But those that remain will merge, become more efficient, find new revenue streams and continue for much longer than 5 years. A major reason for poor performance by print media has been a fall in advertising during recession, it is likely that when things improve economically, this revenue stream will again contribute majorly.

I cannot imagine a day when I cannot buy the New York Times in hard copy format. Will Sunday newspapers become websites only updated on Sundays?

MP3's have been around ten years at this stage and still 5 times more cd's were sold last year than digital downloads. New technologies take time to replace old ones see (Technology Adoption Lifecycle http://bit.ly/18N9AK), and I think the Kindle is more than 5 years from replacing the humble newspaper
