Now it may not be the sexiest side of all things social media, but the question of whether older people (we're talking around 65+ here) really use the internet for anything other than email gets asked more than you might think. The silver surfer market is still a valuable one for many brands, but it's not touched upon all that frequently. I personally believe that it's an interesting topic that should be discussed more and that this mature market should feature more heavily in online marketing plans. According to a recent survey from Pew, 38% of U.S. adults aged 65+ now go online. Clearly this isn't a majority share, at around 4 in 10 but I think it's incredibly impressive given the fast pace with which you have to adapt to new technology today..... Read More »
The way we work is changing with more and more of our work being carried out online using tools and online services that for the most part are free. I have assembled the following list of 10 tools and services that I use on a daily basis and that I have learned to love through trial and error. I honestly do not know how our business would function without them and once you start using them your life will be made a lot simpler and easy to manage. Most of these services will be known by people who come from a technical background and work online but I am always surprised by the amount of people who have no idea that these great free tools are out there... Traditional print media has been taking a bit of a hammering now for the past couple of years. Circulations are way down and advertisers are taking the dollars elsewhere to getting better return on their money and to engage consumers in more interactive ways. Just last year newspaper circulations were down 30%, a huge amount for such an important industry that has helped to shape opinion and influence millions of us over the years. We look at a combination of the factors that have caused this decline and see if we can find any short term solutions for an industry that is on it's knees at the moment. The biggest problem is that producing quality news costs money, professionally trained journalists and the infrastructure that they need to help them report are all costly and in order to be supported and for the medium to continue the industry needs to find additional revenue models outside of advertising and find them very fast. Here are some of the reasons why the print industry is struggling followed by some of the possible ways it might get out of the mess... Read More »
We recently won a pretty large client very simply through Twitter and as I said on Twitter at the time "It helped me feel better about the hundreds of hours I had spent dossing on Twitter". Nobody needs to preach to the merits of Twitter to me but one complaint that I do often hear people saying to me is Twitter really worth all the effort and will I get business out of it? Just last week we conducted an extensive interview with Loraine from La Cucina a business that is using social media effectively to bring real customers through the door and she said that Twitter was the least effective tool for getting customers to come to her shop although it was good for networking with other food bloggers. The thing with social media and Twitter in general is that it changes so quickly and trends can appear from week to week so I wanted to get a discussion going and run a poll and see what the majority of people out there thought. For what it is worth here are some of the thoughts that I have on the issue... Read More »

Every time that I log in to Facebook I feel more and more as if the biggest social networking service in the world is morphing in to Twitter. For the last year and certainly since they acquired Friendfeed they have been rolling out features that are a direct carbon copy of what Twitter has had so much success with. We wanted to have a look at some of the biggest changes that Facebook have made and how they are all making the service seem more and more like twitter starting with the new share feature which is basically a carbon copy of the retweet feature on Twitter... PR is one of those businesses that is seeing a massive shift in how it operates thanks to social media. There are many industries that are in a similar position like the music industry, recruitment, print media and many others but PR is one that interests me especially and I have been following for some time. Many people (within the social media industry mostly) claim that PR is dead but that is over reaction. Changing, yes. Evolving certainly, but dead no. To show the importance of PR here is what one of the most successful business men of his generation thinks of the business... Read More »
