Are Phones About To Wipe Out The Digital Camera Industry?
There is a revolution going on in the quality of photos coming from smart phones, and the improvement in quality is such that it could signal the end for the digital camera. A professional photographer might not agree but for a layman like myself, you can now take pictures on your phone that are every bit as good – if not better – than an expensive camera.
Phones have had the capability to take photos for many years now, but it’s only in the last year that they have caught up with digital cameras in terms of quality of images produced. For somebody who takes the odd picture, there’s no longer a need to have a digital camera and that has to be a big worry for the entire digital camera industry, especially when you consider the fact that phone cameras can only improve even further from here on in.
Stats Show Phones Are Taking Over
Flickr might not be the most cutting edge of social networks any more, but they do share the information on which cameras are used to upload photos onto the site. As you can see from the graphs below, the iPhone is by far the most popular camera and other smart phones are starting to follow suit.

The Social Element
If you think the stats are high for photos taken with phones on Flickr, they are nothing compared to the new range of social mobile apps that are out there. Instagram, Path and Oink are apps that rely on photos as the main function of the site, and then you have the big guys like Twitter and Facebook where people share millions of photos from their phones every single day.
Stunning Picture Quality
I’ve always wanted to get into photography but I never had a good enough camera, or the time to learn it. Like many of you, I tried to take nice pictures but they never worked out. Most were out of focus, blurred or looked cheap and nasty. Recently, I’ve been taking some pictures with my iPhone 4S and the improvement is remarkable. For the first time ever, I can actually take good photos. The pictures below were taken in restaurants on the fly without any fancy lighting or other aids and you will agree that they could nearly appear in a cook book!
For the first time, I can take my phone out of my pocket and point and click and get results like these. While in the past I had considered paying a few hundred Euros for a specialized camera, those days are gone now. No camera I could buy would give me results so much better that I would want to carry it around and pay extra for it.

The End Is Nigh
I fully expect professional photographers and people who obsess about the quality of their images to come back on this post and say that the traditional camera has a long future ahead of it. I’m sure it does because a phone will probably never replace a professional camera, but the change is rapid and people are relying on their phone more and more.
I can see no reason for people to buy a digital camera in a couple of years time as many people have already abandoned them. Why would you pay more, carry around two devices and go through all the pain of uploading photos when you can do all that from one device that you already own? I wouldn’t want to own shares in digital camera companies right now because their industries are about to get decimated by the mobile phone.
