Facebook Starting To Seriously Piss Off Business Page Owners
It’s been all change for the last couple of weeks on Facebook and one group of people who are starting to suffer are brands and businesses. The new changes to subscribing, timelines and friend lists mean that business pages are barely showing up in user’s feeds any more. Have a look yourself at your Facebook profile and scroll down and you will notice all the brands and businesses are gone. I’ve liked hundreds over the last couple of years given my line of work yet I couldn’t find one in my timeline.
We’ve had people on to us from all over the world looking for help after seeing their engagement numbers and general visits just fall off a cliff. Here is one example of an email I received last night…
The FB changes this week have prompted me to act quickly. Business has dropped off a lot this month, and I think the progressive FB change roll-outs are adversely affecting sales. I’m just not getting seen and I’m very worried about it. Newsfeed impressions have been way down. Are people not switching on or are my posts just not making it into their newsfeeds? It’s deathly quiet, I’m terrified, and I don’t possess the necessary expertise to know what to do about it.
The Problem Facebook Had To Fix
Facebook had started to feel very much like the image below in recent times. A busy street where I could meet my friends but every single business and brand was there hanging around shouting for my attention at the same time. It was probably getting a little too brand centric if truth be told and Facebook being as ruthless as they are have ripped brands out of the news feed to preserve the user experience.

Pages Will Align With New Time Lines
We’ve seen in the past that as soon as Facebook updates one part of the site they usually align the rest of the site to fit in with the same design. More than likely pages will start to look and feel like the new time lines and as you can see with this one I mocked up in a couple of seconds on my own page it could change the entire look and feel of the brand pages with more of a onus on selling products and providing a more engaging experience.

Getting Impossible To Target Fans
You used to be able to send all your likes an update using Facebook’s messaging system but from the end of this week they are cutting that off as well saying that the best way to contact people is via the wall. It’s as if Facebook doesn’t want brands or businesses talking to their consumers in any way. The key thing to notice here is the last line in the image which says “we are focused on creating even better tools”. My guess is something much more efficient is on the way for Facebook page owners.

What About All The Work Done To Date?
Brands and businesses have spent billions on acquiring likes for their pages as well as creating apps, landing tabs and other custom solutions to help build communities on Facebook. At the moment it is all in limbo as those communities are being severely marginalized by the fact that brands can’t contact them directly or build engagement like they used to. Facebook are not stupid and are probably doing this for the greater good and will roll something stronger out in the coming weeks but word on the street is that the people spending all the money on Facebook ads are not too happy with all the new changes. They best do something quick. Have you noticed decreased interaction on your business page?
