Facebook Finally Rolls out ‘Actions’; 78 Different Apps Now Included On Timeline
In what was probably the worst kept secret involving Facebook, ‘Actions’ has been finally unveiled for Timeline in the form of 78 different apps. Revealed at a private event in San Francisco, the change moves beyond the traditional ‘like’ and allows you to choose an action instead, which will take the form of a verb chosen by the app developers. The aim of ‘actions’ is to flesh out your web activity on timeline, reflecting your interests and tastes depending on what apps you download.
So instead of posting a status update which tells your friends about a brilliant song you’ve only discovered, you could add the song through Rdio with the option for your friends to ‘listen to’ the song in question. Or if there was a recipe that you just tried out and wanted to share, you could do so through one of the food apps such as Yummly or Foodily. The ultimate aim is to personalise and enhance your timeline and share the moments where you discover something new or interesting.
Another element to these changes is that your friends’ activity will appear on your activity log on the side of your page as part of the company’s frictionless sharing initiative. Here you can discover what your friends are watching, reading, listening to, and cooking to name just a few examples.
It’s expected that Facebook will begin allowing third party developers to create their own apps with unique actions soon and that the first batch will be made available in the coming weeks. So before you’ll know it, there’ll be an app reflecting every possible action you can think of for you to add onto your timeline.
