Niall, I agree with you. This was not an effective or rational way for a father to address his daughter. I believe that children need consequences but this was extreme and immature. I can rest assured that it did not contribute to the desired outcome. The father was smoking and shooting a gun, now that is a great example. Teenage girls are rebellious by nature and feel entitled but no one seriously knows what is going on in that home. This father’s behavior is concerning and it surprises me how many people think that his actions were an appropriate response! It speaks to how we handle problems in our society, just as the hateful comments left regarding how you should never be a parent. I quess if you have a problem or disagree with someone insult them or tote a gun!

 Yes.  She chose to attempt to humiliate her parents publicly using that computer…the computer he spent half his day and over $100 upgrading that same day.  Yeah…I’d say he had every right to do it, and I’m perfectly fine with what he did. The kid had it coming.

He bought it and he is the adult who PAY”S the bill in the house. It is actually a true story, I know the man personally. After the video went viral he thought it only fair to ask his daughter if she wanted to post a video but she declined and is actually moving on past the situation.

I love your post. You get it! Im from Texas so I am pretty much are the same as this guy. We have guns and when we get frustrated we go out to a range or the back end of the property and fire a few off. He was simply taking out his frustrations on the laptop instead of his daughter.

It’s his choice how he brings up his children, the same as it is ours and there is no handbook or rights and wrongs, only the rights and wrongs you hold true to yourself. I would, personally, make her donate her laptop to charity, since she’s so ungrateful for the life and things she has. And lastly, just because someone has a gun and shoots inanimate objects doesn’t mean they are prone to violence when angry.

The reasons why he destroyed the laptop was mean to be a shock to his daughter.

Again, words do not always work for teenagers.

Sometimes a non-violent “shock to the system” like this is necessary to get someones attention.

Had I been a teen, this certainly would have made me think about what I had done.

If this man was really following the cycle you believe in, he’s dug his own grave by throwing himself into the lime light.

As for me, I believe him to be another responsible gun owner.

For most of the civilized world, guns are this scary thing only seen in movies or in the hands of bad guys, people in the military and police officers.

One thing you need to realize, is that just because someone has a gun and shoots something, doesn’t mean someone is going to get hurt.

I’ve been around guns for several years now after living in a household where guns were not allowed for what are probably the same reasons that make you say what you do.

You know what I discovered after thinking the same thing? Most people who own guns are pretty good people.

Because your probably not used to people displaying firearms, I can tell you this man had no  mannerisms that would hint towards intentions to hurt his family or anyone else around him.

Susan. I don’t know what country you live in, but in the America that I grew up in, I heard more cursing outside the home then I ever did at home.

My parents never cursed. At all. They both grew up in Asia and never used that kind of language, even in their native languages.

I learned all of my curse words in school, from people who had seen it on TV.

At this point, with social media and television, you can’t expect children to only hear curses and other bad language at home.

The thinking that a child picks up bad language simply from hearing it at home is outdated.

Also, you cannot judge a parent on one instance, no matter how crazy you might think he is or or how you disagree with what he did.

It’s like judging a student from one bad assignment or an athlete from one bad play or incident.

Most of us feel that this man is a great parent and its only because of how disappointed he was at his daughters post that he went as far as destroying the laptop.

As for her being young, I have no idea what household you grew up or how you were raised, but I would never dream of saying anything close to her rant to my parents, directly or indirectly.

Just because shes in her teens doesn’t mean shes not to be held accountable for being disrespectful.

This man did what he felt was necessary. The shock that I’m sure his daughter received from this will keep it in her mind for a long time.

I dealt with the same situations as a kid.

My father never cursed and rarely ever yelled, but whenever I or my brother made him mad, he would yell so loud we would have to cover our ears.

Hearing our normally quiet and calm father raise his voice to that extent was meant do one thing; open our eyes to the seriousness of the situation.

He never once beat us, he never once threatened our lives, he was the greatest father one could ask for, he supported me when I was at my lows, he praised me when I deserved it and he taught me everything that I know.

He taught me how to appreciate the little things, how to be a responsible adult, and how to treat others as how you would like to be treated.

That is exactly what this man did and that is why we all applaud him for it.

Oh my God… first off, he’s on his own property and the laws regarding the discharge of a firearm are specific to the area in which that person lives. I doubt he would knowingly break this or any law, video record it, then post it on the internet. Report him to social services? For what??? As someone who knows about the foster care system, I can tell you that nothing he did warrants having his kids taken away nor would he be court ordered to take any sort of class. As I have posted before, shooting a laptop is VASTLY different from shooting his daughter. If you listened to his words instead of focusing on the gun, you’d see that he was perfectly stable and HARDLY a bad parent! Plus, if you would read his postings about the circumstances surrounding the video, you’d know that he warned her after taking the computer away that if she did it again, he would “put a bullet in her computer”. He was simply following through with the consequences he set for her.

I have just read through your link above and I guess what’s important to note is that it’s all Tommy stating (apparently) that law enforcement said “this” and law enforcement said”that”. I am  yet to read an article where either his daughter or wife have formally stated a response (in their own words not his). At this point I’m not sure I believe everything he has said is entirely true. It all seems like “heresay” to me. Maybe a formal interview from the chief of police approving of Tommy’s parenting style would be more convincing. It would be very worrying if police officers who support Tommy used his video to educate and intimidate children in schools regarding appropriate social networking!
