Yeah Ben I agree with you that it is optimistic but there is no doubt that making as much public as possuible is where Facebook wants to go and is pushing it at the moment. Search is the one area where they still don't have it right but I do think they have made some big improvements in the last 6 months and they are positioning themselves very well. The biggest issue I think they have is getting people to share the links. It is very natural to do it on Twitter but not so much on Facebook even though it is incredibly easy to do. Will be an interesting one to watch unfold over the next few months. Why don't you build it!!

Unfortunately the way you look at this is slightly over optimistic. Facebook is by nature much more personal and therefore more secure (in a data sense) than twitter. For example, you can't really do a public search by status update on facebook, but you can on twitter.
It would however be a good idea, as Facebook is vastly bigger than twitter. This would enable news to get "out there" very very quickly. Perhaps Facebook in the future will make it easier to share publicly certain posts (admittedy, it is simple now if not misunderstood) to the world or services like tweetmeme so news can be on desks within hours, if not minutes, of it going up.
