Who Is Going To Build The Tweetmeme For Facebook?

One of my favorite sites for finding news on the web at the moment is Tweetmeme. I use it very much in the same way as I used to use Digg as it does a better job of aggregating content in real time and I can see any interesting stories breaking all over the world. It does have flaws around the Re tweeting of stories but it is becoming a more important site on the social media landscape with impressive traffic growth and it can in my opinion go on to be a major challenger to social news sites like Digg and become a portal for breaking news stories. The site works perfectly simply because people learned how to share links on Twitter and they were easy to aggregate but could the same sort of system apply to other platforms? Facebook in particular?
Tweetmeme Growth
Tweetmeme is one of those sites that have just sprung up organically and kept on growing. You only have to look at this grapgh to see how quickly they have grown in less than a year.

Sharing On Facebook
You may have noticed recently that Facebook have been busy trying to add Twitter like features in the hope that you share all your private data and start spreading links through the service so as they can improve the real time nature of the website. You will have seen more and more sites adding the “Share on Facebook” button to their posts and this shows that although the rate of adoption is slightly slower than it has been on Twitter this is going to become a more and more important feature in the months to come. So that is why I am asking today why somebody hasn’t launched the Facebook version of Tweetmeme to aggreate all the links that are shared across the platform. There is not doubt that it is a slightly different audience (albeit a considerably larger one with close to 400 million users) but links are slowly starting to be share through Facebook and it is only a matter of time before this area explodes.

Why Not Build It Yourself?
You’ll need to move fast on this one as I would be stunned if somebody had not starting developping this service already but the good news is that it is relatively easy to build if you have the knowledge and it would be sure to get some serious attention online to get it kick started. If I had the time I would be trying to build something like this myself because it is only a matter of time before something like this comes to market and when it does it will be absolutely massive. Go do it!

Unfortunately the way you look at this is slightly over optimistic. Facebook is by nature much more personal and therefore more secure (in a data sense) than twitter. For example, you can’t really do a public search by status update on facebook, but you can on twitter.
It would however be a good idea, as Facebook is vastly bigger than twitter. This would enable news to get “out there” very very quickly. Perhaps Facebook in the future will make it easier to share publicly certain posts (admittedy, it is simple now if not misunderstood) to the world or services like tweetmeme so news can be on desks within hours, if not minutes, of it going up.
Yeah Ben I agree with you that it is optimistic but there is no doubt that making as much public as possuible is where Facebook wants to go and is pushing it at the moment. Search is the one area where they still don’t have it right but I do think they have made some big improvements in the last 6 months and they are positioning themselves very well. The biggest issue I think they have is getting people to share the links. It is very natural to do it on Twitter but not so much on Facebook even though it is incredibly easy to do. Will be an interesting one to watch unfold over the next few months. Why don’t you build it!!
