2 Impending Facebook Changes You Should Know About
One thing that we know at this stage is that Facebook is a constantly changing platform that is always likely to change and take new direction with new features added on a regular basis. I wanted to bring 2 of those impending features to your attention today, one that will have what I think will be a positive impact for all users and help cut down noise and one that all page owners and businesses with Facebook pages should know about and prepare for immediately. I have to say that it is one of the areas that Facebook is not great at letting people know about and I’d be especially worried for small businesses who don’t have in house design capabilities and will need to redesign and realign pages. Here are the 2 Facebook changes that are coming very soon that you should know about…
Facebook Page Tabs To Change In Width
There has been a huge rush as individuals, brands and businesses have embraced Facebook with many choosing to launch their own Facebook page. Many have taken it a step further and developed custom tabs with lots of different designs as well as custom applications that have fitted in with Facebook’s mark up language FBML. The width of those pages to date has been 760 pixels but on the 23rd of August Facebook will be changing those pages to a more slim 520 pixels. Facebook will also be doing away with the “box” system that many will be familiar with As Facebook say themselves…
- We will notify users via messaging in profile boxes and in the Help Center that the “Boxes†tab, boxes on profiles and Pages, and application info sections will be going away.
- Application Tabs. Next week, we will give Page admins the ability to preview their custom tabs in the new 520 pixel width so they can modify their layouts as needed. All profile and Page tabs will be resized automatically beginning the week of August 23.
This is part of a bigger re-design and Facebook have given plenty of notice but page owners should try to prepare in advance. Read a little more about what this means for your page here.

Facebook To Allow Users To Unsubscribe From Notifications
Social media as a whole is very noisy and for anybody with Facebook email notifications switched on your inbox can become a serious notification headache. Even with email notifications switched off you are still at the mercy of notifications on Facebook itself. Leave a comment on the wrong status update, photo or video and you could be getting notifications for weeks that really have no interest to you. Well in the last couple of days Facebook have been testing a handy little button that allows you to unsubscribe from notifications so as soon as something gets a little bit too noisy you can in effect get out of there! The feature is not live for everybody yet but it will be soon and I for one will be a big fan of this feature. I’m not sure how brands and businesses will feel as it will cut out some of the engagement and stop returning visitors but it will ultimately improve the Facebook experience and that can only be a good thing!
