Never forget that one of the massive benefits of social media is that you get to have fun. You get to take your branding and identify to completely new levels and engage with your users in a real way that gets them talking about you and, most importantly, remembering you.
Forrester have recently released a blogging policy in which they require employees to blog on a Forrester blog platform and abandon their own personal blogs in the process. To me this ultimately misunderstands your strength as a business – your employees are the face of your company and personal blogging should be encouraged, not restricted
With the launch of Google Buzz yesterday the whole internet is screaming that it could be the end of Facebook and Twitter but we take a much more realistic view of the product here and say that although yes it is a great product it does still have a few early flaws that need to be ironed out. It looks as if Google has esentially taken the best parts of Facebook, Foursquare and Twitter and just added them to Gmail and called it Google Buzz. It will be interesting watching the development of this product over the coming year and it could be a big social win for Google…
The increasing consumption of content online has resulted in a trend of content farms. Sites whose purpose is to mass-produce content as cheaply as possible. The content is written for the purposes of SEO, not for people, so what impact is social media having on these content farms?
Two sites have launched this month, based purely around asking and answering questions. The sites are fascinating in that they perfectly suit two basic functions of human nature : nosiness and narcissism. Social media has led us to obsess both with ourselves and other people and the always-on culture means that sometimes, there’s no getting away.
A recent survey found that 91% of companies used social media in their marketing mix in 2009. Remember when people were desperately trying to get links on other blogs sidebars? Or trying to get as many fans as possible on Myspace? Or trying to get to 100 fans to claim their Facebook vanity URL? The race is just about to start again and the latest object of people’s desire? Twitter lists.
For those of you not familiar with Twitter lists they are a new feature that Twitter are releasing on to the site that allows users to create their own lists of people they like. So I can group “top techies” or “great chefs” and others can see these lists and choose to follow people on the lists. The big problem with all this…Twitter decided toshow just how many lists people are on public on all profiles.
There is always some sort of race on in social media and the latest one that will inevitably kick off is the race to appear on as many lists as possible. People will soon forget all about the race to get the most followers and the people who spent hours of time manually adding followers or writing scripts will now move on to trying to get themselves on to as many lists as possible.
