Though there are now many tools that will analyse your presence online, the analytics of social networks themselves is a hugely valuable area that remains largely untapped. Facebook’s recent introduction of impressions per post could be a game changer and we need to more sites offering insights such as this, that add value to your social media campaigns.

Social media can seem very hard to measure for ROI (return on investment) and it is usually one of the first things that people ask us as an agency. One of the lucky things is that there are more and more tools coming on to the market that help measure ROI and this video does a great job of picking some of the headline figures form the last year and adding it to sexy music to show people the benefits of social media. Truth is that it would take a little delving in to the figures to see just how much work was put in to achieve some of the numbers talked about here but the video is great viewing and will no doubt be used by people all over the world at conferences and in their presentations…

Now it may not be the sexiest side of all things social media, but the question of whether older people (we’re talking around 65+ here) really use the internet for anything other than email gets asked more than you might think. The silver surfer market is still a valuable one for many brands, but it’s not touched upon all that frequently. I personally believe that it’s an interesting topic that should be discussed more and that this mature market should feature more heavily in online marketing plans. According to a recent survey from Pew, 38% of U.S. adults aged 65+ now go online. Clearly this isn’t a majority share, at around 4 in 10 but I think it’s incredibly impressive given the fast pace with which you have to adapt to new technology today…..

PR is one of those businesses that is seeing a massive shift in how it operates thanks to social media. There are many industries that are in a similar position like the music industry, recruitment, print media and many others but PR is one that interests me especially and I have been following for some time. Many people (within the social media industry mostly) claim that PR is dead but that is over reaction. Changing, yes. Evolving certainly, but dead no. To show the importance of PR here is what one of the most successful business men of his generation thinks of the business…

I have a simple request for the powers that be at Facebook…please put the people who designed and built your iPhone application in touch with the people who build your website. I use Facebook on a regular basis for work and clients and I have to say I find i an incredibly frustrating experience at times on the web. In contrast when I use it on my iPhone it is one of the most enjoyable experiences and I can navigate to the places I want to be and achieve the tasks I want to accomplish in a matter of seconds. We spend most of our time on the go these days and people are busy, accessing the internet on the go is a key strand of social media….

In the latest of our series of blog posts about small businesses using social media effectively we look at a small local cafe called La Cucina using the free tools that are out there to great effect. The key is that Lorraine who is behind all their social media activity has figured out what does and doesn’t work for them and now drills down to use the effective tools more than the others. This is the perfect story to demonstrate how a small business can use social media (their cafe seats 18 people) and how it is not just for big brands. Some great lessons in here that we could all learn a lot from…

In social media it’s easy to get distracted by the numbers and think that this is going to help you determine the authority of a particular blogger or someone on Twitter. But it’s not about calculations, it’s down to the individual that knows the industry and the people inside out and no algorithm is going to accurately tell you this.

For a couple of years the smart companies using social media were the ones who happened to have a techie within the company who could see the rise of social networks and services like Twitter or perhaps the company had some smart advisers who watched trends closely. Things have changed now though as the social media market has matured and companies are starting to look at it from a strategy perspective and they are looking to implement bigger changes to their whole culture. In this post we use Coca Cola as an example, a company with hundreds of thousands of people within their organization are going to need to make sure their message is in unison across the company…

I spend a lot of my time reading, it is one of the best ways to educate yourself rapidly about this relatively new industry of ours. If you are willing to put the time in there are hundreds of great blogs out there where you will be able to soak up information like a sponge and today I wanted to highlight a few that were not as well known as the big hitters out there but that provided valuable information on social media and the industry as a whole. I always find it amazing that people are willing to share as much knowledge but they are mostly trying to promote their own knowledge so there is no harm you benefiting from that knowledge yourself so here are 25 great blogs that you may not have heard of…
