Are You A Blog Lurker?

Posted on November 12th, 2009 by Niall Harbison in Blogging, Thinky

Are you familiar with the term lurking? It means to hide without being seen in corners without participating or engaging and it happens an awful lot online and I just wanted to see if there were people lurking on this blog who would be happy to introduce themselves. Even the term lurking sounds like it is saying something bad about someone but the truth is that even I lurk on most sites that I spend a lot of time on apart from a handful of my favorite blogs. Are you a lurker?…

I am always asked about how we get traffic to this blog and the answer is pretty complicated as you will see from the diagram in this post. We use a whole range of social media tools and sharing options including Youtube, Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin and slidshare and as you can see in the diagram we combine it with lots of other traditional marketing methods in order to build an audience here and further enhance our community. Try some of these techniques yourself and see how you get on…

Last week we were lucky enough to have a story featured on a couple of big sites and it generated over 800 Re tweets so we decided to have a closer look and see if there was any interesting data within the analytics of the tweets and see if we could extract any interesting patterns. What we also noticed was that because there was so much data we got to see what apps people were using to access Twitter and just how long the story was popular on the site itself. Have a look and see what 800 Re tweets does for you on Twitter…

On Wednesday we were featured on Techcrunch and we just wanted to share some of the traffic stats so as we could give some perspective into the amount of traffic you can expect from one of the biggest blogs in the world. You won’t get covered that often so make sure you get it right when you do.

Why You Should Be Guest Blogging

Posted on October 29th, 2009 by Niall Harbison in Blogging

You probably want to grow the readership on your blog, the majority of people do. There are a lot of different ways to do this including SEO, writing great content, building community and using social media but one that most people overlook is guest blogging. So the idea is simple…you write posts for other blogs that are in your niche and expose your writing and ideas to a whole new audience. You can create the best blog content in the world but if people don’t get to read that content it can become frustrating. You can see how we post guest articles on other sites like Lauren writing on Mashable and me writing on Rotorblog, these are both well established successful blogs in our own niche with substantial traffic.

Content Is Not King

Posted on October 25th, 2009 by Lauren Fisher in Blogging, Traditional media

There’s a popular phrase that’s been doing the rounds in internet and marketing circles that ‘Content is King’. Content is not King. The phrase has been troubling me for some time because it’s far too simplistic in its ideology.

Suggesting that ‘content is king’ is suggesting that a website with good content will solve all your problems. What it overlooks is the need for good distribution – essentially communication – of the content you produce. There’s no point in having good content if no-one’s consuming it. It simplifies the fact that anyone producing good content actually has to work hard to make people find it and that the content alone is not going to bring people to your website. Other than with a bit of good SEO. You need to create a community on your website,
