Everything in moderation! We all like a glass of wine, maybe the odd cigar when celebrating and a big steak with some peppercorn sauce but all in moderation. Now if your talking about an addiction to your own website, that’s something I do need help with Niall!

Yeah you need to be disciplined Sabina! If i was working in a normal job like a restaurant or shop that was using it I would limit myself to a half hour or an hour a day and be very hard on myself. There is always a little bit of down time or quiet time that you can set aside but you’ll also find like times of year like Xmas businesses just won’t have time, they’ll all be caught up doing real work and making sales!

You should start off by just trying Google Alerts and maybe run a couple of searches on Twitter around the terms you want to monitor

This is a great one, Niall! It definitely is a vicious circle. With the amount of information available everywhere it just seems that, while engaging in social media activities is undoubtedly useful, it can literally eat up your life if you’re not ruthless with the information and, as you said, discipline yourself.

Tks Niall. Monitor what is being said about different brands, which consumer topics are hot, controversial, etc Can one filter by geographic region e.g. Dublin, Ireland?

Yeah i is very easy to fall into the trap of thinking it pays for the bills because most social media is a lot of fun and we all like doing it! We are very lucky here at SZ that it does actually pay the bills but for most people it is only a tiny part of their business and that is something that is worth remembering! What sort of social media conversations are you looking to filter? There are literally 100s of tools so should be able to help you in some way!

Hi Niall. Excellent post and I think so many of us can fall into the Social Media trap where we are too busy to do our Day job…activity on SM does not pay the bills so discipline required. Would be interested in your advice as to best tools for filtering SM conversations. Niall Mc
