Hi Niall,
I have been struggling with the idea of blogging for quite some time now. I think I'm finally ready to give it a go. The only issue is, I have no idea what kind of blogging website I should join. I'm aiming for a personal, yet entertaining route, with that said, if anybody has any ideas for those kinds of outlets, please let me know.

I'd really appreciate it.
Thanks,
Adrian

yeah exactly. I don't think a lot of people know that sites like yours are a blog and that some of the big nespapers in the UK etc have large parts of their sites built on blogging software. They are just websites TBH

Great article! And I'd have to agree - very few of our readers have blogs themselves - and most don't know or care whether they are on a blog or not. All that matters is that the content is relevant and engaging

Robert I think your comments prove the post to a certain extent in that a blogger is always more likely to comment. Many people might have passed your blog by and not felt inclined to comment but I did and so did you in return. You are right though about Google, there is no doubt that the largest amount of traffic to blogs comes from search engines and that is where their real power is

Excellent Post Niall.

Ironic isn't it, that I am commenting here as a blogger because I found your site when you commented on my blog. But I suppose it is really dependant on you topic and niche. Like me, my blog is technical and deals a lot with the subject of blogging.

But I also get a lot of traffic from Google. I think people underestimate the help their blogs can have. Answering questions that people ask will certainly get them traffic.
Even though there are 200 million blogs today, there are still very few business blogs, and still more who have no idea what a blog is, or who do not care for one.
I am one of those who is convinced that a business blog will actually benefit a business substantially.
I really enjoyed this post.

Yeah I have to agree. In fact i was giving a course last week when a woman asked me what a blog was and I even had to explain it from scratch. When I showed her a few examples they all started saying to me "those are websites" which is pretty much what blogs are I guess. I think the word blog actually does a lot of damage and has a lot of stigma attached to it! A blog is essentially a website after all and you are right most people just arrive on them via search.

Yeah I think there is no dount that some of the first people who will start reading your blog are bloggers as they are more tuned in to finding new blogs and that is who you are going to network with at the start. If your writing is good though and the subject interesting enough there is no doubt that they will have reach beyond just other bloggers and in to the mainstream. You are well on your way anyway!

I think you underestimate the number of random surfers who come across a blog much as they come across a website: most people don't even see the difference in a search engine result. Lots of non-tech people don't even realize they're on a blog.

I have often wondered this exact thing about my blog. I believe in the beginning when trying to make a presence online, it's mostly fellow bloggers who read the articles. However, as I generate more and more content, I'm hoping more non-bloggers stop by for a read.

Either way though, I just have to keep my head down and keep plugging away.

Great post and Happy Holidays...
