Brilliant Powerade Twitter Campaign Shows The Power of Football

Twitter has become a massive part of our viewing experience. Whether it’s among our friends or for wider commentary, voicing our thoughts and interacting with others who are watching alongside us (but not physically) has become a ever growing trend.

This couldn’t be more apparent than in the world of sports where fans commentate on the match or event they’re watching. Powerade theorised that Twitter has become the second screen when big sporting events like the World Cup are occurring. So they came up with an idea as to how they could utilise this and turn it into a second platform for sports.

For this year’s Copa America held in Argentina, Powerade created a campaign, The Power of Football, that showed live infographic for every game played in the tournament. The competition featured all the top South America teams including Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, Mexico and Paraguay and for each game, they created a way to take tweets through the hashtag #gol and showcase matches through them.

The microsite aggregated every tweet about every game and compiled them into an interactive infographic style interface. Here you could view the happenings and incidents for every minute of each game through tweets. So you could see every goal, every card, every substitution and every event that occurred in each game through the eyes of the public.

The campaign was a success with Powerade’s sponsorship experiencing a boost and the brand experiencing significant promotion digitally. It’s clear from the participation that the campaign was a massive success and it’ll only be a matter of time before other brands begin copying and improving on this for their own events, whether they’re sporting events or not.
