With a $1.5 billion valuation (whether that's justified or not really depends on whether you feel social media bubble is going to burst soon), Pinterest is extremely popular with e-commerce sites for the traffic it brings and its focus on pinning products. Being the third most popular social media site in the U.S. - behind Facebook and Twitter - and a new study cements its purpose as a valuable e-commerce tool.
Online commerce site Shopify has analysed data from over 25,000 Shopify online stores and found that Pinterest users spend an average of $80 per order, the highest of any site and twice the average of what Facebook users would spend.
Delivering the same amount of referral traffic as Twitter, those users referred to a site by Pinterest are 10 per cent more likely to buy than those who arrive from other sites and 70 per cent more likely than those from referred from a website.
