It has been a long time coming, but 2012 is going to be all about monetizing for Twitter. Some of the biggest brands in the world have been testing out the ad platform for the last year but now, thanks to a partnership with American Express, a test group of small businesses across the U.S. are also going to have access to the new self service ad tool.
This is what Twitter hopes will turn into a massive cash cow when they roll it out to the general public around the world later in the year.
The following video explains how the platform is going to work in layman terms with promoted tweets and promoted accounts at the centre of it. The ads will work across mobile and the web and will offer businesses the chance to get in front of more people. However, Twitter is careful to point out that the tweets will only be shown to people with relevant interests.
Early reports about engagement levels have been good, but what I'm looking forward to seeing is how this will scale and if advertisers feel like they are getting value. The video makes it very simple for even a local non-web savvy business to understand, which is key, and it looks like an impressive first step for the Twitter money making machine which is about to roll into town.
