There was huge buzz around Turntable.fm

when it launched a couple of months ago and we were all addicted here in the Simply Zesty office as were many around the world. The game changing music service was quickly limited to the USA due to music licensing issues just as hype was buildingĀ  and the passionate early adopters were left in the lurch. Given the high profile nature of Turntable.fm though and the fact that they have quickly raised $7 million from some high profile backers a new clone has emerged called Rolling.fm. The site offers the exact same sort of layout, social features and group sharing music experience. You access the service by simply connecting your Facebook profile and crucially (for the moment at least) you can use it no matter where you are in the world.

You can read a more in depth interview with the founders over on Venture Beat but it's not surprising to hear that they are claiming that their own service is unique and that have a whole new take on social DJ music rooms. There are some additional features including the ability to customize your avatar but this is essentially an identical clone of Turntable.fm in all but name. These sort of 2nd to market clones don't always tend to work out brilliantly as the original site always has too much traction and hype (think Foursquare versus Gowalla) but there is no doubt that all the people who can't get in to the Beta version of Turntable will be happy to have an alternative.

It'll be interesting to watch this service try to compete and navigate the legal mind field that is the music licensing business and I'd be surprised if it takes on it's bigger competitor in the long run but it is good to have options. What do you think? Will you be trying it out?
