There has been a lot of talk for the last few months about Storify
a new tool that lets users create their own news stories by using content found on social media channels like Facebook, Twitter and Youtube. The site has been in private testing for a while but has just gone live for all and it could just change the way people put blog posts together or even how some online publications curate the news. The tool feels completely idiot proof and could not be easier to use and it'll be interesting to see if this gets adopted quickly by the mainstream. It removes a lot of the hurdles that are there for blogging and makes beautiful rich media stories that you can embed anywhere but who will want to make their own news stories? On the other side of the argument is this tool good enough for professional bloggers and journalists and will they want to embed 3rd party software in to their own publications? It's certainly very useful and easy to use but the biggest question is who is the target market?
How Does It Work?
This tool essentially lets anybody become a news curator and sits somewhere between blogging and the tools that a professional journalist might have to help them put stories together. The real beauty is that it is completely idiot proof and you don't need any technical knowledge to use it at all. You can have your own story cut and paste together in a very short amount of time.
I gave myself 10 minutes to see if that was enough time to put a story together and used the example of the race to be the World number 1 golfer which took place yesterday. I couldn't believe how easy it was to drag and drop content around the screen and use the text editor to add the words to my story. You can see that it looks good and it's all made using content on social networks and my own time. If I had a little more time I could have found better content and made it look a lot better but you can see that it is a great start.
Will People Use It?
I really love the site and the way it is so easy to put stories together but personally I will be sticking to this blog to curate the information I find online. I can embed tweets, videos and photos here as it is and Storify although beautiful jusr doesn't add anything else to me. It might work for people who don't have blogs or websites and the really interesting thing will be to find out which sort of users they go after. As far as launches of new products go though I have to say I am impressed, this is as slick as it gets.
