Stephen Fry quits – Twitter responds

Stephen Fry apparently quit Twitter tonight, citing unkindness and meanness for his reasons of departure. The outcome on one side shows support pouring in for Stephen Fry, asking him not to leave Twitter. Conversely, we are also seeing mob mentality, with abuse and slander being hurled at the tweeter @brumplum who is apparently the one responsible for the departure. The picture isn’t pretty and has shown a new side to Twitter.

Don’t Get Sucked Into Twitter Lists

Don’t Get Sucked Into Twitter Lists

Remember when people were desperately trying to get links on other blogs sidebars? Or trying to get as many fans as possible on Myspace? Or trying to get to 100 fans to claim their Facebook vanity URL? The race is just about to start again and the latest object of people’s desire? Twitter lists.

For those of you not familiar with Twitter lists they are a new feature that Twitter are releasing on to the site that allows users to create their own lists of people they like. So I can group “top techies” or “great chefs” and others can see these lists and choose to follow people on the lists. The big problem with all this…Twitter decided toshow just how many lists people are on public on all profiles.

There is always some sort of race on in social media and the latest one that will inevitably kick off is the race to appear on as many lists as possible. People will soon forget all about the race to get the most followers and the people who spent hours of time manually adding followers or writing scripts will now move on to trying to get themselves on to as many lists as possible.

New Facebook European HQ Dublin Open

New Facebook European HQ Dublin Open

Ebersman claimed that “Facebook was still a very small company with only 750 employees but that it was growing rapidly and broadening it’s usser base”. Jobs to be created at the Dublin HQ include Sales, HR, Finance and “some engineering”.

SEO Is Just Good House Keeping

SEO Is Just Good House Keeping

I read a couple of really top posts recently about SEO (here and here) and it got me to thinking about it’s importance. The guys were talking about building something so remarkable that people would come and use it no matter what and that the cream would rise to the top. I love this idea and agree with it to a large extent but it just doesn’t work like that. Not everybody has the ability to build truly outstanding products or services.

Lets compare it to the real world. SEO is very much like traditional maketing. There are really nice innovative, subtile ways to market yourself and there are more annoying yet effective methods such as leaflet drops, telemarketing, TV advertising and various others.
